The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was found guilty of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in incarceration, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" came to light.

This included attempting to break his ankle monitor and a invitation to a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.

In a document approving the detention, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his flight.
